|
Nickname: Coach Profession: Businessman (industrial psychologist), professor, jazz musician On the Brewers: Fanatical love of the game, appreciate tolerance of the old guy; I sense a great rugby family culture - really like that. Chance to play with my son, and pass on a little back line knowledge of the game. Good to get outside myself and give a little back if possible. On Rugby: Creativity, concentration, teamwork/support, sportsmanship, parties, always more to learn, fitness, balls-out mode, on and on. Connection with other countries. History: "Hare core football player in high school - got a package for college but switched to rugby freshman year. 4 years at Gettysburg College - flyhalf (1980-1984) - pretty much undefeated all 4 years. 12 years for Manhattan Rugby Club, D-1 club in NY (1984-1995) - outside center (was beefy in those days), then wing; ended up playing fullback for MRFC's Les Vieux team (a youngish old boys team, best players in their 30's and we tore up the league for the 5 years I played) Then I stopped playing for 15 years(!) to start a family. Came out to CRFC to play touch with my son Kieran (now 14, Lions player) to see if my legs would still work, and to share something with Kieran. Now look what's happening - go figure. I watch international matches with my boys 5 days a week - love it!" |

For me, on top of the typical team sport components (such as teamwork, competitiveness, camaraderie, etc.) it's probably the broad range of skills that's required from every player—defend, attack, run, pass, tackle, kick—as well as the central base theme of rugby: get the ball over the line. Everyone is out there to have a great time and the commitment level is right up my alley. On Rugby: The brotherhood that instantaneously forms between so many different people is what draws me back season after season. The actual rugby part of it though is why I keep coming back, playing intense goal line defense, or making huge tackles on someone who tries to run over you is something that very few people get to experience, and even fewer get to do it while not wearing pads. The final selling point for me was the social jackets, nothing but pure class. On Rugby: It's a great game. It's fast paced, everyone is active.
