11 Feb. 2012 - Coos Bay, OR
The Brewers caravan loaded up and headed South and West to the sunny coast town of Coos Bay to take on the Bay Area Ruggers. Holy crap, is my face sunburned? The Ruggers came out much more determined and focused than last season's 72-0 walloping but the Brewers were still able to come away with a convincing 54-7 victory.
The match started slow for the Brewers as the Ruggers held on to their own possession and were able to collect penalties from the undisciplined Brewers. The muddy and tiny field proved to be a disadvantage to the faster and more organized Corvallis team who had trouble getting much of an attack going by passing the ball wide and then being stopped by the touch line. After some defense inside their 22 the Brewers finally managed to gain some possession and move the ball down the pitch and set up at near the goal line for Dave Malone to plop over with the games first try. The Brewers struck back with another try from Ryan "Handsome Boy Modelling School" Hanson. James "Supreme Beardy?" Holmes ended the first half shenanigans by running out the back of the try zone, he's just to modest to score. The Brewers entered half time with a 14-0 lead.
To start the second half the Brewers came out playing some real Brewer style rugby with hard charging rollicking runs by the forwards leading to two tries from Mongo "That guy has a real name, right?" Yonatan Weiss added another try off of a quick tap penalty and dive for the line. New Brewer Matt "Oooo-Woooo-Oooo-wolf sounds" Wolf added a try off a nice cutback run from a play from the back of a scrum. Then James Holmes decided to defeat his shyness, not run out of the back of the try zone, and dotted down for 5. Mongo having no shyness problems ended the Corvallis scoring by finishing off his hat trick and with Jake "He don't get no nickname" Jones hitting 7-8 conversions the Brewers led 54-0 with a few minutes left to play. After some back and forth play neither the Brewers or Ruggers wanted the game to end, Corvallis elected to quick tap a penalty as time was up and committed a penalty to give the ball back to the Bay Area. BAR attacked the line with their most cohesive attack of the day and after a behind the back pass and overloading the Brewers defense the Ruggers dotted down a center post try to end the day at 54-7 to the Brewers.
Brand new player, Brandon Miller got his first game time and the Brewers also christened several new CRFC players, Brandon Christensen, Marc DesJardin, Kansas Rudolph Mendelson, and Matt Wolf.
